Artist Statement
My beginnings as an artist started with sculpture. I would carve into natural materials (wood /stone etc.) without knowing what I was creating and something profound would always emerge. I further developed my craftsmanship with the confidence that something would always show up and carry me through. It wasn’t long before I started getting clearer visions of what I wanted to create. I no longer wanted to be limited by the size and shape of the materials I could acquire. I experimented with assemblage techniques and felt a strong connection to the processes I had developed for creating my own style of sculptures. The idea of life in the materials or life in a work of art fascinated me.The sculptures I would make must have life or a sense of movement. This idea I would call “STILL ANIMATION”, whatever the subject matter was it would be reduced to shapes with plains and surfaces where light and shadows merge to give a reference to time, memory and dimension. My work had a wide range of subject matter, interpretations of the everyday objects (appliances, automobiles and robotic figures etc.).
At this time I began being inspired by the old masters; Bernini, Rodin and Michealangelo
After doing my version of “THE THINKER” I decided to take on Bernini’s “APPOLO and DAPHNE”. His version based on a Greek fable in which woman escaping a man does so by becoming a tree. This sculpture floored me when I saw it, now this was the “Still Animation”!! ( from hundreds of years ago). I instantly thought of my own version circa 1982, the woman is connecting to the sky through electricity and the man is stunned. I found that this version tells a different story to everyone and I prefer my work experienced that way. Artworks that have life and inspire the imagination are the biggest successes to me.
The work I created during the 1970s, 80s and 90s set the pace for what would come in the 21st century. My contemporary representations continued in the forms of limited editions and larger public sculptures using many formulations of hi-tech concrete I had developed.
I found security in my continuing study of the modern, cubist and abstract masters of the early 20th century (Leger, Mondrian, Fieninger, Duchamp), just to name but a few. I enjoy thinking that my work is like the continuation of that movement and possibly a link to others in the future.
In 2005 we re-located to Santa Fe, NM. from California, the soul, beauty and colors of this land had a bigger affect on my work than I ever thought possible. Combined with my sculptural practice of “Still Animation” I discovered the further adventures, of a new place using painting as my map for my mind visitations that report on the “DIGITAL UNIVERSE”. For more information on this see “Visual Reports from the Digital Universe”. I feel the strong connections of my work over the years to the present and know that it will continue for the rest of my life. My goal has always been to stimulate the imagination of others using my vocabulary of artwork to create a new language.
