The encounters people faced in a time where people moved westward for a better life, a different pace and a change of scenery, developed a unique culture. This culture developed through the time period of the 1900’s through to the late 1940’s and 1950’s created a sense of positivity and growth and of course, a new frontier.

In Fred Calleri’s newest works, the focus is on the persona of the westward traveler. Calleri offers a contemporary documentation of the western landscape, Native American influences, aeronautical inventions, highways and roadways like route 66 and of course the trucks and cars that ran across them. A graduate of the Maryland Institute College of Art, Fred Calleri has taken his education in figurative and representational painting to another quality. His slight distortions in the figure offer a romantic and mysterious edge that is evolving to a smoother blending of the representational narrative that is created in each painting.

Join Fred Calleri and Beals & Abbate Fine Art for a fun reach back to a seemingly simpler time; this time of new exploration, a time of developing culture and a time of fun. The Lonesome Heroes, western daydream music from Austin, Texas will be performing for Fred Calleri’s show on May 11th from 5 – 8pm and on May 12th from noon – 4pm! The Lonesome Heroes debut full length Daydream Western has been nominated by The Independent Music Awards for album of the year for 2011. Described by Austin NPR affiliate KUT 90.5 FM as: “Western Americana, a cross-pollination of rock, folk, and country with psych and indie pop – influences from their Texas and Brooklyn backgrounds. It’s the soundscape that occurs when indie rock and country artfully cross paths.”. Inclusive in sound, the Lonesome Heroes are as comfortable in the West Texas desert as the sandy shores of California. Pigeonholed as Alt Country for too long, Daydream Western represents a maturation of their sound into a highway revelry that crosses state lines and blurs genres seamlessly. The core of the band consists of the shared songwriting and vision of Austin based couple Landry McMeans (vocals/dobro) and Rich Russell (vocals/guitar.) 27 states, four years of national touring, and two critically acclaimed EPs finally brought the Lonesome Heroes to the studio under the production guidance of Austin steel guitar legend, Gary Newcomb (Li’l Cap’n Travis, Richard Buckner, Stone River Boys, Bill Callahan.) Mastered by recent Grammy award winner Brian Lucey at Magic Garden (Black Keys, the Shins, Dr John) Daydream Western, will have an official national press and radio push in March after an action packed SXSW for the Heroes with 10 show in 6 days.

  2. “Lift” by Frank Gonzales… a Work in Progress!

    May 3, 2012 by admin
"Lift" in progress by Frank Gonzales

Lift is the appropriate title for this newest work by Frank Gonzales. He has been working on his fine art career for quite a long time, but not always for himself.  Gonzales was a large part of the success for a New York based artist representative company. During these formative years, Frank would paint after hours at his studio apartment in New York City after the subway or bike ride directly from work. These long hours were pressing and fulfilling at the same time and in the front of Frank Gonzales’ mind was the chance to one day move back to his home town in Arizona and be a full-time artist.

"Lift" by Frank Gonzales, in progress!

"Lift" by Frank Gonzales, in progress!

That chance came after Frank Gonzales’ solo show in 2011 at Beals & Abbate Fine Art, “Fragments of Nature”. The show was almost sold out before the reception. About twenty works were collected from people around the world. Really, around the world collectors were excited about the works, including Switzerland, Mexico and Canada. Frank’s painting “Amplifier” was on the cover of American Art Collector Magazine’s October Issue. The strong cover gathered much more attention for Frank Gonzales. The ‘Lift’ of Frank’s career was definitely in motion!

Furthermore, fine art enthusiasts were writing about the latest work. Including mentions from Arrested Motion, Boooooom, ProForums, Paso Tiempo, Revista Remiz Magazine and many other local bloggers. ‘Lift’ indeed, and in the welcomeness of Frank Gonzales’ latest series, he was overwhelmed with thankfulness.

  3. Still: Wild & Wide Open in the West! Featuring Lynne Pomeranz & Cody Brothers!

    April 7, 2012 by admin

“Still: Wild & Wide Open in the West”

Featuring Lynne Pomeranz & Cody Brothers

    Opening Reception, Friday, April 27th, 5 – 8 PM

    "Alma" by Lynne Pomeranz!

In this unique collaborative exhibit between two well-versed photographers, Lynne Pomeranz & Cody Brothers, you will be educated immediately about more than the subject of their stills. You’ll find the awe-inspiring beauty of the west and find it to be certainly wild & wide open.

    "Pecos Fence" by Cody Brothers!

A gifted photographer, Lynne Pomeranz feels the moment and translates it to a medium that preserves it against time. “As a photographer, I am reminded daily of how precious and fleeting a moment can be. I am drawn to horses, landscapes, subjects unbrandedby time, and the sense of poetry in everyday scenes that tend to go unnoticed.” Pomeranz presents her newest photographs of the horse, wild in the west.

"Rite of Passage" by Lynne Pomeranz!

"Rite of Passage" by Lynne Pomeranz!

In expressing his narrative of “the western abandon” Cody concentrates his focus on abandoned farms, crumbling homes, neglected churches, aging cemeteries, forgotten cars and other objects, set within the vastness of the southwestern landscape. He works almost entirely with infrared film, using a range of different cameras, from a 4×5, pinhole and a 6×17 panoramic.  Brothers presents his newest photographs of the landscape, wide open in the west.

"Golondrinas, NM - Buffalo" by Cody Brothers!

  4. Santa Fe Opera Season 2012!

    April 4, 2012 by admin

Spending time with my grandparents in Santa Fe left me with some wonderful memories that have a fond place in my heart. One of those memories were the trips to the Opera house in Santa Fe. I don’t really remember much of the actual operas that I saw or the singers or a particular stand out performance until I became older. What I remember most as a child at the Opera was the intermission, which followed with a short walk to get my Häagen-Dazs® Bar! Returning to the Santa Fe Opera as an adult is a magical experience and I’m thrilled to help announce the 2012 season of the Santa Fe Opera!

    Tosca – Puccini

    Passion. Politics. Death.

    June 29: July 4, 7, 13, 20, 30: August 8, 11, 15, 18, 21, 24

Tosca opens not with an overture, but with an ominous chord progression that ascends like rolling thunder. To opera – lovers, these three chords mean only one thing: Baron Scarpia, the corrupt police chief and suavely cruel aristocrat before whom all Rome trembles. Though he does not make his entrance until midway through Act 1 and dies before Act III begins, Scarpia is a terrifying presence that spans every moment of Tosca – from the opening chords until the diva’s final words, “Scarpia, I will meet you before God!” Is he opera’s ultimate villain? – read more by asking for crescendo at The Santa Fe Opera www.santafeopera.org

    The Pearl Fishers – Bizet

    Vows Made. Vows Broken.

    June 30: July 6, 11, 31: August 10, 13, 22, 25

When the priestess Leila makes her entrance in the first act of The Pearl Fishers, her face is veiled, her identity is unknown, and the aura of alluring mystery that surrounds her is palpable. It takes just a breeze and a glimpse of her face to set the opera’s fateful events in motion. – read more by asking for crescendo at The Santa Fe Opera www.santafeopera.org

    King Roger – Szymanowski

    Good King. Bad King.

    July 21, 25: August 3, 9, 14

What does it take to be a good king, or to lead a spiritually enlightened life? What happens when these values conflict? Perhaps most important to Santa Fe operagoers: How do philosophical questions like these shape King Roger, an opera that has electrified audiences throughout Europe – but has rarely been performed in the U.S.? – read more by asking for crescendo at The Santa Fe Opera www.santafeopera.org

    Maometto II – Rossini

The Heat of Battle. The Heat of Passion.

    July 14, 18, 27: August 2, 7, 16

The sound of Rossini is cherished by opera lovers around the world for its inexhaustible melodic invention and buoyant energy. But Rossini’s serious side offers far more than just beautiful tunes. The more he composed, the more he turned toward serious themes in operas combining great bel canto vocalism with music that is psychologically probing and epic in its historical sweep – operas such as Maometto II, a story of the conflict between love and national loyalty in a war – torn Middle East setting. – read more by asking for crescendo at The Santa Fe Opera www.santafeopera.org

    Arabella – Strauss

    Beautiful. Eligible. Broke.

    July 28: August 1, 6, 17, 23

Sir Andrew begins by saying, “Arabella has always been a great Favorite of mine. It’s about a really seriously dysfunctional family. You have the father, who has gambled away all the family money. You have a very fussy hysterical mother, and then the two daughters, Arabella, who is the eligible, the elder, the beautiful one, and in whom the parents have great hopes of finding a match that will solve all their financial problems. And then you have poor Zdenka, the younger daughter, whom they can’t afford, as it were, to put about in society because it would be too expensive. So they dress her up as a boy.” – read more by asking for crescendo at The Santa Fe Opera www.santafeopera.org

Do something different, something special, bring your child to The Santa Fe Opera and when it is time for intermission, go get them an ice cream!

  8. Art Chat at the Inn of the Anasazi with Santa Fe artist, Deborah Gold!

    February 21, 2012 by admin

Deborah Gold’s goal is the nourishment of the emotional self through sheer beauty and the
appeal of nature. Gold paints forms with colors, replacing firm outlines and smooth surfaces with
patches of color and thick impasto. She paints what she sees stressing freshness of tonal modeling to
produce velvety textures, clarity of high key effects, spontaneity in brush and knife strokes. Gold
paints the essential character of what she sees. Her art is an art of sensitivity to light rendered in
freely applied paint to create poetic imagery suggesting the joyous release she feels when observing
    nature.

Gold has a fascination with the momentary quality of the illumination. She is an Impressionist
in the sense that she tries to communicate the “first impression” made on her by a particular scene,
letting the full glory of nature’s sunlight pour in upon the retina. Gold is born a colorist with a passion
for beauty. She sees herself as a poet capturing the glory of nature. Deborah Gold’s art is the painting
of beauty and the beauty of painting.

“The Inn of the Anasazi is such a wonderful place to have art chats. The hotel personally invites their guests to an intimate evening with Beals & Abbate Fine Art artists. The connection with the guests and the artists, along with wine and refreshments, takes us directly to what could be the artist’s studio yet set in a beautiful setting just moments from the plaza.” – Bobby Beals

“Chocolate boxes were handed out to each guest compliments of Deborah Gold, Beals & Abbate Fine Art and the Inn of the Anasazi. Each chocolate was hand-made by CoCopelli Chocolatier . The name CoCopelli is not only a play on words, but a reference to an ancient god who was a very important figure in the world of chocolate. The chocolate plant was used extensively by the Mayan and Aztecs thousands of years ago. The beans, called Theobroma cacao, meaning “food of the gods,” were believed to promote health and even to have aphrodisiac qualities. The beans were ground and made into a thick elixer used in fertility rituals and health-fortifying ceremonies. Kokopelli was the fertility deity in those ancient cultures, where hot drinking chocolate held an important place in the rituals. He was also a traveler, trader and a bringer of music, happiness and enjoyment to all. Bringing happiness is our objective at CoCopelli, too. We strive to make the world a sweeter place, one cupcake and truffle at a time. We plan to make CoCopelli the community expert in all things chocolate and build a sweet tradition in Santa Fe.” – Lauren Roybal, Owner & Chocolatier. www.cocopellisantafe.com, 505-438-2626!

  9. “Juicy” featuring Anthony Abbate!

    February 17, 2012 by admin

Juicy written by Western Art Collector Magazine, February 2012, Issue 54.

A bowl of papaya sitting on his kitchen counter led to Anthony Abbate’s newest series of ink renderings, Juicy Fruit.

“One day when I was passing through the kitchen my wife said ‘you should use papaya in your artwork.’ I thought it might be interesting… it was,” recalls Abbate.

His intense interest in a particular subject at any given time causes Abbate to work in series. He spent a year and a half on his recent cactus series, Cactus, Cacti, Cactuses, producing more than 400 images, until he discovered fruit.

“I have been so inspired by this new series that I have created more than 50 pieces in the last four months,” says Abbate. “With the Juicy Fruit series I discovered two things – first, the background could be as interesting as a the main subject while still complementing rather than overtaking the composition, and, second, that the title of the work could also be interesting enough to add a spark of enhancement to the work.”

In this series Abbate explores the curves, the texture, and the softness of fruits from around the world as well as the vibrancy and contrast of color, shadow and light. His backgrounds always offer an element of surprise or unexpected juxtaposition, and in Juicy Fruit they explode.

“The colors, the movement, and the composition of the background are all dynamic elements in the arrangement and display of the main object – the fruit,” he says. “In addition, there is another element, a background of sorts that I have also enhanced specifically for this new series, and that is the framing of the work. My framing has always been unusual and unique since I consider the frame to be part of the artwork.”

Abbate’s surrealistic images are created using archival pigments on 100 percent cotton rag paper. Each original is mounted, floating on a subdued translucent colored piece of resin for viewing without the use of glass.

“This framing technique is an original creation and very much a part of the artwork,” adds Abbate.

Beals & Abbate Fine Art will host an opening reception for the artist’s new Juicy show on February 24, 5 to 8pm., in conjunction with Santa Fe’s Edible Art Tour.

Bishop’s Lodge Resort & Spa’s acclaimed restaurant Las Fuentes will be catering the event in support of the Edible Art Tour and Art Feast to help raise money for the art programs in Santa Fe public schools. The non-profit has raised over one million dollars, given five scholarships and celebrates its 15th Year Anniversary this coming Friday, February 24th!

    February 12, 2012 by admin

In November of this year Beals & Abbate Fine Art  partnered with Sanctuary Camelback Mountain Resort & Spa in Scottsdale, Arizona to host an Art Chat with Santa Fe sculptor Michael Peralta. Michael discussed his latest series with guests while he worked on his latest piece. Many were enthralled by  his distinct techniques and were happy to experience first hand the humble beginnings of one of the beautiful and intricate bronze scupltures Michael creates. After finishing the piece, he appropriately titled it,  Sanctuary.
